Summary of IOP

1. The topic I dealt with is the depiction of power in the novels The Rock of Tanios and In the Time of the Butterflies. The argument I presented is that despite differences in setting, authority is represented as oppressive and totalitarian in both novels due to the presence of tyrannical rulers. I dealt primarily with the characters of the Sheikh and the dictator Trujillo and highlighted the similarities in their manner of rule and other aspects they had in common. I used a painting by Sirena Varma as a hook and it depicted numerous symbols revolving around a crown symbolizing power. The numerous symbols represent elements of the rule of any dictator such as opposition by the people and the role of the church. I used a simple power point presentation to show quotes that highlight the similarities.

2. I think this IOP was very useful as an exercise in presenting a prepared subject to a group of people. Another lesson i thought was illustrated is that practice makes perfect and so i feel that had i practiced more i may have presented in a better manner. With regards to the hook, i appreciate the help i was given and also appreciate the importance of not simply beginning by talking but using something to more actively engages the audience. With regards to preparing the iop i now realize that maybe it would be easier to find relevant quotes had i been actively reading and underlining significant quotes. By watching the presentation again i see that im not too bad of a presenter but should work on having fewer false starts.

I didn't get to see yours since you're in HL so it's a good thing I read a brief summary ;) The painting as a hook is a good idea, it's always better to start off with something creative and interesting so the audience doesn't directly get bored. That way you get their attention from the start. Your topic also seems interesting, specially because you joined a theme found in two novels you've read. I must agree on "practice makes perfect" because the more you practice, the more you find yourself comfortable with your presentation, specially when it comes to the time limit.

Hani, I too foudn your hook very interesting. The assocition between the different aspects of power (religion, public etc.) was very interesting. I also liked how you later refered to the painting while concluding your statement, supporting your argument once again. I found your topic very originial and found your argument very persuasive. Yours was the only presentation I saw that compared two different novels, requiring double the work I imagine since you had to search for supporting evidence from two books as opposed to one. On the topic of searching for quotes, I share your sentiments in wishing I had actively underlined and highlighted quotes while I was actullay reading the novel, rather than having to go through the novels again for the presentation.

Hani, I must say, I was very impresssed with your presentaion, on many levels. The first thing i noticed was that you spoke confidently, with no hesiation, and you atriculated very well. The second thing (that made the first point possible) was that your presenatin was very well-researched and your points and arguements were strong. As a history student, I can see that you have really tapped in to the characteristics and personality traits of typical dictators and rulers. As for the relection of your reflection and IOP, it's true that it was a very important exercise that helped us all in our public speaking skills. The more comfortable we are with speaking to an audience the more succesful we will be in the future, as these skills will help us in the work place.
